MK Personal Collection The present lot is part of a larger privately held collection and is intended for exhibition purposes only. Rare Rolex Red Submariner Ref 1680 Ref 1680 Wristwatch Circa 1970 First Place Trophy. This very fine and rare Rolex Red Submariner Superlative Chronometer Super Cool is engraved on the back "H.I.B.T. (Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament) 1972 1st Place Team". The winning team was called Hawaiian Big Game Fishing Club. What makes this Rolex really rare is that this was an Official Rolex Sponsored Event and the watch was in fact the winning prize! It was not given as a gift from friends or family, it was given by Rolex to the winners which is very cool and super rare, The watch features a three piece steel oyster case Ref 1680, stamped on inside back cover II.70 Serial #2.XXX.XXX, original black dial with luminous round, triangular and bâton indexes perfectly oxidized to a golden glow, and luminous "skeleton" hands featuring the rare submariner printed in RED ink very cool. Cal. 1570 rhodium-plated 26 jewel movement with a straight line lever escapement, monometallic balance adjusted to five positions and temperatures, shock-absorber, self-compensating Breguet balance-spring, Microstella regulating screws serial # D981,XXX that is in running condition. It's very hard these days to find steel Red Submariners untouched by bad watchmakers. This is a great all original watch. Introduced in 1969 the reference 1680 is the first Submariner to receive a date window, thus eventually gaining the official name the Submariner Date. The present example is known to be the "Single Red" Submariner among discerning collectors, featuring an eye-catching red line of text on the bold Submariner logo. In addition, the present example can be identified to be a MK IV dial, features being the "660ft=200m" text placing feet in front of the meters, the "open 6" style 6 text, and the middle stroke of "f" placing lower than the stroke of the "t" on the "ft" text.
