MK Personal Collection Extremely Rare Men's Patek Philippe Gubelin Astronomic Moonphase Wristwatch Ref 2438-1 Circa 1958. This 18k yellow gold gentleman's wristwatch was retailed by Gubelin. The watch has a perpetual calendar, moon phases and an 18K yellow gold Patek Philippe buckle Ref 2438-1 Serial #2602742. The watch has a Cal. 27SCQ damascene nickel lever movement that is stamped twice with the Geneva seal. It has an 18 jewel bi-metallic compensation balance, adjusted to heat, cold, isochronisms and 5 positions, precision regulator Serial # 888.142. It is topped with an exotic original "Gubelin" silvered dial, applied faceted baton numerals, blued steel centre seconds hand, apertures for day and month, subsidiary dial for date combined with aperture for moon-phases, outer track calibrated for seconds, with a screw-down case back that measures 44.00mm x 38.49mm including the crown. The watch was manufactured from 1958 to 1963. Reference 2438-1 was the first water resistant-type perpetual calendar wristwatch produced in series by any company. The total production of the Ref. 2497 and 2438-1 combined was just 179 pieces. Today just 20 yellow gold Ref. 2438-1 have been sold at major auctions. The aesthetic impact of the reference 2438-1 largely stems from its iconic lugs, defined by the carved groove to the upper outer edges, a feature it has in common with the reference 2499. This detail transfigures the overall look of the watch imbuing it with a subtle yet stately importance leaving no doubt that one is in the presence of one of watch collecting’s all-time classics. The present watch is from the model’s second series with a second series Mark I dial. The first series reference 2438 is recognized by its applied Arabic numerals and feuille hands. The second series, such as the present, can be found with two dial variations: Mark I - with applied five-facet “bullet” baton numerals and dauphine hands; Mark II – with shorter four-facet baton numerals.
