MK Personal Collection The present lot is part of a larger privately held collection and is intended for exhibition purposes only Rare 18K Rolex Paul Newman Daytona "The Golden Pagoda" Reference 6239 Circa 1967. This is a very rare and extremely well-preserved yellow gold chronograph wristwatch with champagne ‘Paul Newman’ dial and tachymeter bezel. The watch features a rare 18K yellow gold three-body construction screwed-down case (Serial #1.938.113), Ref 6239. It measures 44mm x 36.50mm and has a unique original bi-colored gold and black Paul Newman dial also know as the the Golden Pagoda. It has applied gold bâton indexes, luminous dots outer minute/seconds divisions, subsidiary dials for the seconds, 12-hour and 30-minute registers. It is signed Rolex Daytona Cosmograph. The watch has luminous gold "bâton" hands, a high grade Swiss Cal. 722-1 Rolex Chronograph movement with a rhodium-plated, 17 jewels, straight-line lever escapement, monometallic balance, shock absorber, self-compensating free-sprung Breguet balance spring that is in good running condition. The watch features a champagne dial with gold graphics inside the sunken subsidiary registers. This timepiece was one of the most luxurious Cosmographs available on the market during the late 1960s. Its glamorous and eye-catching and it is yet another variant of the beloved “Paul Newman” model. Reference 6239 was hardly ever cased in gold. During the reference's life span there were approximately 300 examples were cased in yellow gold, which is quite astounding when one takes into account the model’s approximate 14,000 unit production run. The dial is particularly impressive as all the luminous dots remain. The larger and slightly slanted “T Swiss T” designation at 6 o’clock is correct for the 1.9 million serial number. Furthermore, the champagne dial has aged gracefully, showing barely any sign of aging. The gold graphics are idiosyncratic of reference 6241 and 6239. Later generation examples would feature white graphics inside the counters.
