Rare Oversized Cartier Lapis Lazuli & Rock Crystal Letter Opener/Watch No 2484/1529 Circa 1927. This is a rare and unusual silver, lapis lazuli and bone letter opener-form watch No. 2516. The movement is signed "European Watch and Clock Co". It has a nickel-finished jeweled lever movement, bimetallic compensation balance, white dial with blue Roman numerals, gilt stylized hands, within the engraved silver letter opener handle, enhanced with inlaid lapis lazuli palmettes decoration accented with rock crystal guards. The sides are secured by four screws in the band and joined to the bone letter opener blade. The inside and outside of case is hand-stamped with Cartier reference numbers 2484/1529. The dial is signed "Cartier" and the movement is signed "European Watch and Clock Co. Inc.". It measures 14" in length x 1 1/2" in width. Louise Cartier was among those inspired, particularly by Chinese works of art. By the early 20th century, Cartier was at the forefront of production of objects de vertu and jewelry described as 'Chinese' in composition and subject matter Chinese aesthetics and patterns with a modern palette that became the firm's signature Chinoiserie style of the inter-war era.
