Elgin Large 14K Yellow Gold Rectangular Wristwatch, Circa 1930–1931. Fine vintage Elgin wristwatch in a two-piece 14K yellow gold rectangular case, measuring 27mm wide (without crown) by 35mm lug-to-lug, case serial no. 1281130. The watch houses a nickel-plated 15-jewel Elgin movement, serial no. 31,256,161, dating to circa 1930–1931, currently in non-running condition (runs briefly then stops). It is topped with a refinished silver-painted dial featuring luminous Gothic-style indexes and subsidiary seconds. The case is finely engraved and remains in overall good condition, reflecting the craftsmanship and Art Deco styling characteristic of Elgin’s early 1930s production. Collector’s Note: Elgin was one of America’s premier watchmakers, producing millions of timepieces from 1867 until the mid‑20th century. The early 1930s marked a transition into more stylized rectangular wristwatches, echoing the Art Deco aesthetic. This example, with its engraved gold case and Gothic dial, represents both Elgin’s technical reliability and its embrace of period design trends.
