Fantastically Rare Men's Steel Rolex Explorer Wristwatch Ref 1016 Glossy Dial Circa 1964. This fine and rare men's wristwatch by the Rolex Watch Co is in a three piece steel Oyster case Ref 1016 Serial #1.041,591. It is stamped on the inside back cover 1016 I.64, Cal. 1560, rhodium-plated, 26 jewel Rolex movement with a straight line lever escapement, monometallic balance adjusted to temperatures and 5 positions, shock absorber, self-compensating free-sprung Breguet balance spring, Microstella regulating screws that is in good running condition (Serial # D34496). It is topped with an original exotic glossy black painted dial with gold gild printing, luminous Arabic numerals and baton indexes, outer minute/seconds divisions exhibiting a deep patina golden glow, luminous steel skeleton hands in excellent condition. The watch is accompanied with an original steel oyster Rolex bracelet stamped on the folding clasp 2 65 7206 58 . The watch is in overall excellent condition. It just needs a good polish. This is a very rare and hard to find in this untouched condition. The watch is all original including the band. The gentleman I purchased this from bought it brand new at the military store. He paid $68.50 for the watch and he was very happy to sell it to me. Needless to say, it was a little more than $68.50 to buy it today.
The celebrated Explorer reference 1016 was introduced to the market in 1959. One of Rolex's most popular sports watches, the Explorer is easily recognizable by its black dial with the luminous triangle at 12, luminous Arabic numerals for the other three quarters and luminous baton numerals for the remaining hours
