MK Personal Collection The present lot is part of a larger privately held collection and is intended for exhibition purposes only. Rolex Paul Newman "Silver Surfer" Daytona Wristwatch Ref 6239 Circa 1967. This is a very rare Rolex Paul Newman Daytona Ref 6239 wristwatch, circa 1967. This fine water resistant, stainless steel gentleman's wristwatch with round button chronograph, registers and tachometer. The case is a three body construction, polished and brushed screwed down case back and crown with a satine silver dial, applied steel baton indexes and tritiumcoated dots, subsidiary "guilloche" dials for the seconds, the 12-hour and 30 minute registers. Tritium coated steel "baton" hands. The watch has a high grade Swiss Rolex Cal 722-l, rhodium plated, 17 jewels, straight line lever escapement, monometallicbalance, shock absorber, self compensating Breguet balance spring, microstella regulating screws. The dial, case and movement are signed ( Serial #2.003.102). This watch is all original and in very good condition. As you can see there was some water damage to the dial and the outer red telemetry is missing. The Silver Surfer monocle was coined by the original owner ,it given as a gift from his parents (Dad) upon graduating Medical School in 1977, he was and still is an avid surfer and was eager to use the chronograph function to time his surfing runs unfortunately the watch wasn't waterproof anymore, he did manage to bring the watch for service but the damage was done, the owner kept the original dial with the damage and wore the watch for another 30 years but he never brought it surfing again. Reference 6239 was the very first model within the iconic Cosmograph Daytona family, and was produced from approximately 1963 until 1976. Available in stainless steel, 14K and 18K gold, reference 6239 was the firm’s first chronograph with the tachymeter scale engraved on the bezel. The model was originally announced as the "Le Mans". It was eventually named the "Daytona” after the 24 Hours of Daytona automobile race.
