MK Personal Collection Rare Steel Breitling Unitime Ref 1765 Wristwatch with 24 Hour Dial Movement Circa 1969. The watch has a 17-jewel Venus Cal.178 TJ manual wind, column wheel chronograph with an original 24 hour matte black, alternating luminous baton hour and Arabic numerals, outer 1/5th second divisions, larger silvered subsidiary dial at 3 for 30 minute recording, two further dials at 6 and 9 for 12 hour recording and constant seconds, white pointed baton hands with luminous inserts, center chronograph hand, Brushed and polished tonneau form, screw down back, bidirectional calibrated bezel, down turned faceted lugs, signed crown flanked by twin chronograph pushers. Breitling created the Unitime as a watch to fill the needs of people using primarily 24 hour units for time. These dials take a little getting used to as 12 midday with a casual glance would read 6 o’clock on a conventional watch. Another unusual feature is the asymmetric dial with the larger minute recording subdial completing the quirky nature and look of this watch. The production numbers of this lies in between numbers 1276xxx and 1277xxx meaning less than 1000 were ever made and due to its unusual function probably less than that.
The Breitling 1765 like the Breguet Type 20 or the Zenith A. Cairelli, was designed for helicopter pilots. Eager to secure a contract with the French army, Breitling rolled out the AVI in 1953. Unlike the dial of the Navitimer, which is jam-packed with information, the dial of the AVI is uncluttered, with only the information that you absolutely need—hours, minutes, and counters for running seconds, hours, and 30 minutes.
