Rare Rolex Red Submariner Ref 1680 Superlative Chronometer Wristwatch Circa 1973. This very fine and rare men's circular wristwatch by Rolex Watch Co. Submariner, Model Ref 1680 comes in a three piece steel case (Serial #3.036.XXX ) with a super rare original black dial with "Submariner" in red writing. The watch has luminous round, triangular and bâton indexes and luminous "skeleton" hands. Cal. 1570 rhodium-plated 26 jewel movement with a straight line lever escapement, monometallic balance adjusted to five positions and temperatures, shock-absorber, self-compensating Breguet balance-spring, Microstella regulating screws that is in good running condition (Serial #D124789 ).
This example of the highly coveted ref. 1680 stands out by its very well preserved MK IV dial with red Submariner script. Nicknamed “Red Sub” by Rolex collectors, the timepiece features evenly aged luminous accents, the full case has never been subject to careless polishing.
Introduced in the late 1960s, the reference 1680 was the first Submariner to feature a date indicator as well as the cyclops magnifier. Distinguished by its red Submariner printing to the dial, the “Red Sub” as it is known to collectors has become a cult classic
